Are you 22 ?

1. Get rid of your guilt:

Honestly speaking, 22 is still quite young and you have a ton of time to work on your goals and dreams. Hence you must first stop feeling guilty about not doing anything till now. Unless you get rid of the guilt you wont be able to think ahead. Don’t let the media fool you about how a teenager sold his app for millions of dollars and get rich. While that might be true but they are exceptions and you should never compare yourself with others.

2. Pick a specific goal:

If you feel you’ve not achieved something means that there is something you need to achieve. Ask yourself what exactly you want from yourself, it might be a better career, money or it could be something else. Once you have a clear understanding of what you want, it’s much easier to start working towards it. A specific goal looks something like. “I want to work as a junior web developer by X months”, “I want to be a freelance web developer and make X dollars in my first month”, “I want to loose X kgs of weight in the next Y months.”

3. You cannot be Elon Musk and Arnold Schwarzenegger, both at the same time:

There is a reason why Elon Musk does not have a physique like Arnold and why Arnold cannot make rockets. The both invest all a majority of their energy to their respective professions and a minimum of it to other things in life. While you want to turn your life, focus on one thing at a time. Be it your career, health or relationships. When you are starting out from scratch, it’s important that you devote the maximum of your time, energy and effort to one thing. Don’t try to get a new job, build 6-packs and find a girlfriend all at the same time. Set your own priorities and work accordingly.

4. Gather resources:

If your goal was to build a house, you would now need to make a list of items you need to start building it. Once you have a clear goal, you will need to make a list of items you need. You don’t necessarily need to buy something, chances are that you already have what you need. For example, in order to loose weight you don’t necessarily need to buy a gym membership, you can just start walking or running. In case if learning a new skill, you might want to gather resources like books, blogs or some reference material. Make sure that you keep these things handy at all times so that you can immediately start working.

5. Start slow:

Where most people go wrong is that they try to completely shift their life in a single day. The want to go from being a lazy unproductive person to being Elon Musk within a day which is entirely not possible. Instead you should try to change yourselves in extremely small baby steps. If you never had worked out, just try walking a few steps today. If you want to quit eating unhealthy, just try replacing one unhealthy meal with something healthy. If you are currently unemployed, start taking the first step towards learning a new skill, maybe take a first step to learn that programming language which can give you a job. Taking the first step will build up your momentum. Once you have momentum, you can gradually increment your pace every single day.

6. Track your progress:

Whatever goal you are working on, you must maintain a journal to note all the progress you have made on a daily basis. For example, if your goal is to get a job, you must write down all the things you have worked on which take you one step closer to your goal. At the end of every week, review your journal and see that if you are taking enough action to reach your goal. This journal will give you a clear idea about where you are headed. It will not only help you track your progress but will also make you feel better about yourself about the work you’ve done.

7. Keep calm:

You don’t have to be serious about your goals, however you need to take them seriously. What I mean to say that is you don’t need to be always be in a constant pressure and think about your goals 24x7, thats just a recipe for disaster. Work with complete focus while you work but when you are off it, make sure that you relax, entertain yourself so that you are fully recharged to work the next day. You can get a lot more work done without even being serious about it all the time. Work more but take it easy and don’t stress too much about it for no reason. Work gracefully and enjoy the process instead.
