Read, read, read and read

Read, read, read and read

I cant emphasize how important it is to read. Read whatever you can get your hands on, if you have the money then buy every book you can on the areas which you want to improve, be it business, marketing, programming etc.

If you cant afford books, then read all that you can get your hands on. Just make sure that the quality of content you read is good.

Be stingy with....

Does not cracking the IITJEE make me smaller than those who actually did it?

Does not cracking the IITJEE make me smaller than those who actually did it?

There are a lot of occasions in life where you can feel absolutely worthless.

  1. You cracked JEE and joined the best IIT but got 5–6 CGPA.
  2. You managed 9+ CGPA but didn’t get a high paying job.
  3. You got a high paying job but the work is absolutely boring.
  4. You got challenging work but the manager is a tyrant.
  5. You got a great manager but the company is laying off.
  6. You escaped the layoff but you are unable to find a partner.
  7. You found a partner but they can’t stop comparing you with their ex.
  8. You found a partner without ex but they don’t love you for what you are.
  9. You found a loving partner but have a hard time conceiving.
  10. You have a child but they are not healthy.
  11. You have a healthy child but they won’t listen to you.
  12. You have a lovely, obedient child but you get laid off.
  13. You escaped layoff again but your child couldn’t crack JEE.

Life is a giant cycle of ups and downs. The lows teach you humility. The highs teach you thankfulness.

Can my future be brighter than those IITians?

My mother isn’t very educated. She has been a house wife throughout. She managed the limited household budget very well. She nurtured and took care of her children to the best of her abilities. She monitored them during their teenage. As a result, she produced 3 (three) IITians. I think she is more successful today than all 3 of us IITians put together.

Be THAT parent if you want to beat IITians. You will literally become the “mother/father of IITians” :-)

For now, love, respect and obey your parents who have been there for you all along. Their prayers and blessings can take you far far higher than what you and I can imagine.

Changing the World

Lock in Brain

Optimise your energy

Optimise your energy

Is there something which is draining your energy.

Are you engaging in some activities which are a huge drain on your physical and mental energy.

Activities like these include, engaging in hate conversations on social-media, consuming irrelevant content for hours, mindlessly browsing social media etc.

You can always analyse your day and list out the activities you did today that drained your energy but were not a good investment.

You can stop doing these and find a drastic increment in your energy levels.

On the other hand, you can also work on enhancing your energy as well.

Activities like running, working out , meeting up with friends in real life are the activities which energise you.

You may also make some tweaks to your diet for being more energetic such as including vitamin-c and a consuming a lot of water.

Cab Driver Makes More Money Than IT Graduates then why to study ?

Sunday, 27 April 2025

I had the same question about......

I had the same question about more than a decade ago when I wondered what separates the class toppers from an average student like me.

Luckily I had the chance to be around a topper and observe him and his actions.

What I learned from a class topper.

While I was in school I was an average student. I studied enough to score well but never topped the class.

However when I was in std 8th, I had a chance to sit besides a class topper.

Here is what I observed and learned from him.

  1. He had a tremendous zeal to score well, the intensity with which he studied showed up on his face.
  2. The amount of enthusiasm this guy had to tackle the exam was mind blowing. If you ever see him revising before an exam, you would think that he was a maniac. Compared to him I was like Meh… its just an exam, let’s write the paper and get over with it.
  3. He honestly prepared till the last moment, he made sure that no answer is left unrevised. He genuinely immersed himself into books. Not like others who study before exam just to show off.
  4. His enthusiasm was contagious, you wont believe that after sitting besides him for an exam even I started studying with more zeal and more passion. I became genuinely interested in studies. This is the very reason you should surround yourself with great people, we end up becoming a bit like them.
  5. As soon as the exam ended, the very next moment he would start preparing for the next one. He knew the value of every minute and utilised well.
  6. Most importantly he didn’t consider this as work or something he has to do but he genuinely enjoyed studying and being a class topper.
  7. Was he talented and had more IQ than others? I have no idea, but I can assure you one thing that he put a lot more effort to study the same topic than others did. If he was really talented and had a god gifted photographic memory then he wouldn’t have had to put so much effort into learning/memorising things.
  8. Was he lucky? He had the same set of Questions to answer as others did. Although he might have had other advantages like a favourable and conducive study environment at home, better coaching however there were plenty others who had much more advantages than him.

These were my key takeaways form him which I follow to this day:

  1. It’s all about how bad you want it. If you are competing with someone else for a thing then the one who gets it is the one who wants it the most.
  2. There is no substitute to hard work, even if you are super talented.
  3. Enthusiasm matters a lot, if you are not enthusiastic or excited about something it will be much harder to succeed at it,
  4. Being genuine always pays, always be genuine to you work and it will reward you back.
  5. Enthusiasm and positive energy is contagious and it shows up in your work. So is negative energy. Hence one must do all the possible things to surround yourself with positive and energetic people and cut out all the people from your life who are inherently negative.
  6. Value time, it is your most precious resource and hence put it to good use.
  7. Luck is definitely a factor, however not as much as you think it is. It does have an impact but the effect of ones luck only amplifies when you put in the hard work.

Don’t be a slave to your smartphone, instead make it your slave

Don’t be a slave to your smartphone, instead make it your slave

Most people in todays world have become a slave to their smartphones.

Notification bell rings, they pick up their phone saying that “Ill watch this one video and then I’ll get to work”. Even before they know it, they have spent an entire hour watching other recommended videos.

Remember, it’s now machines vs humans. Social media algorithms have gotten so good that they know what exactly you like. In fact they know more about you than yourself and hence they know how to keep you hooked.

Instead of being a slave your your phone, make it your slave.

Don’t let it suck value out of you, instead you suck the value out of it.

Use apps like reminders to remind you of the important stuff you need to do, use the phone to talk and network with people.

Download apps like Kindle, Audible read and listen to a ton of books.

Use apps to remind you to drink water and take a walk every hour so that you stay healthy.

There are hundreds of ways you can use your smartphone to optimize your life and to your own advantage, but only when you actually stop being a slave to it.

You have paid a hefty price for your device, extract every drop of value out of it.

I was in a colony function the other day, when an uncle came to me and asked .....

I was in a colony function the other day, when an uncle came to me and asked me a similar question, though with a different profession in mind. You have an amazing profile, why don’t you prepare for UPSC and become an IAS officer?”

A few days back, another person had asked me, “You have an amazing academic background, why don’t you opt for a research career and try for a top-notch Ph.D from Harvard?

Quite a few people have also asked me why I don’t try to become an entrepreneur.

The thing is - everybody has different goals in life, and what might work for one person might not work for another.

For the time being, I am very happy in management consulting because it keeps me on my toes. There is something new to learn every single day, an extremely smart peer group, and fast-changing industry dynamics.

The day I get bored of management consulting, I might try something else. But for now, I am happy with my career. We don’t have to always go by the norms of society. I would rather focus my energy towards exploring different facets of life these days.

Optimal.......

You can only improve things which you measure

You can only improve things which you measure

Let’s say you want to improve your ability to focus.

After a couple months, you wont be able to tell if you have made substantial improvement unless you have some metrics to measure.

You can only say you improved your focused work hours by x% when you have the data to back it up.

To have that data, you must track measure and track something which proves your performance.

For example, on day 1 you can say I worked for 1.5 Hours in a focused manner. You can keep tracking it every day, and can measure your progress.

Things Not Worth Anyone's Time

Consistency

Consistency: Understand than improvement is not a one day game. Improvement is a gradual and a very slow process. You can only start working on improving certain aspects of your life today, does not mean that you will see the result in the next day or even next month. Why most people are skeptical about self improvement is because they lack patience and expect fast results. To improve upon anything, its’ important that you do it on a daily basis. You don’t need to do a lot but you need to do it daily. To remember this, keep this phrase in your mind “Doing a little everyday > doing a lot a single day”.

To have bigger goals, you must be around good people

To have bigger goals, you must be around good people: Most of your achievements do not depend on your hard work but depend upon the people around you. If you are around mediocre people all day long, chances are that you will end up being like them. This is why families which belong to a certain class in a society always remain in the same financial circumstances for generations to come. The way in which this works is that when you be around people, you are influenced by their thoughts and actions. For example, if you are around drunkards you will thinking that drinking a lot is common and you will end up being a drunkard. When you be around chain-smokers you will find smoking to be acceptable and you will end up being a smoker as well. If you be around people who think making X amount of money, buying a car which costs Y is acceptable then you would impose that standard on yourself as well. Imagine if you be around your friends who are terribly fat, they eat potato chips, drink soda and lay down all the time. Chances are that if you hang around with them, you will end up being like them as well. On the contrary, if all of your friends are fitness addicts with a six pack, even if you are a fat guy the next time you go out with them you will feel ashamed of your body and would at least think about joining a gym. Hence always be around people who are better than you, it’s better to be along rather than being in the wrong group of people. If you have no people around you who can be ideals then read autobiographies of great people, reading them has the same influence as being around them.

Once rain is over, the same umbrella becomes.......

Act on the criticism

Act on the criticism : Don’t just say “I am a lazy person, I procrastinate a lot”. Instead do something about it. Self-criticism is the first step, acting upon it is the second but more important than the first one. Once you address your flaws, act upon it. If you have certain habits which are holding you back then find ways to eradicate those. Criticising yourself alone wont do anything unless you find a fix for your problem. You wont improve yourself in a day, even in a month. The process of improvement is gradual and continuous and lifelong.

Self-criticism is extremely essential

Self-criticism is extremely essential :If you are someone who truly wants to improve then you need to be your only biggest critique. Being a self critique is extremely hard and not a lot of people can be one. You cannot improve unless you know whats holding you back from achieving your true potential. Analyse what habits are holding you back. Im sure you must have a habit that you know is holding you back and you know that you should do something about it but when you think about it, you feel guilty and try to ignore it on purpose. criticism can be harsh, it can make you depressed for a while but is extremely essential for self-improvement. Its like that bitter pill you need to take when you get sick, it tastes terrible but it will make you better.

Stay humble

Stay humble: I’ve seen people fill up with pride like a hot air balloon when they achieve a teeny bit of success. They get a huge ego boost, they start considering themselves as some kind of god who knows it all and can never fail however thinking that is a recipe for disaster. Yes, you must celebrate your success but you should also realise that there are tons of successful people that are way ahead of you and have done a lot more than you did. Only then you will be able to think ahead in life. When you be humble and realise that your success is nothing as compared to others, only then you will be able to reach to the level of people who have achieved a lot more than you.

People Develop Their Attitude Depending on........

Karma's Role In Unemployment

Saturday, 19 April 2025

You will suck at everything

You will suck at everything :When you start something for the first time, be it a new business, a new job or learning a new language. You will be terrible at it no matter how high your IQ is. Everyone who starts something new will suck at it at first, however most people don’t start or pursue something new just be cause they expect to hit the home run in their first attempt. If you lift weights in a gym for the first time you will realise how weak you are and your body will ache terribly the next day. When you start to learn a programming language for the first time, most of the things wont make sense and everything will seem so complex. However if you keep doing it, you get better at it after a period of time and you will suck less. When you still keep pursuing it you will get good at it. Hence, don’t be afraid to do something new just because you don’t know how to do it. Unless you do there is no chance you would learn how to do it. You can’t learn to swim unless you jump in the pool.

Karma's Role In Unemployment

Do motivational Speakers bring massive, or, even real measurable transformation in your life?

Let me ask another similar question.

  • Do good teachers help students to learn?

The answer to this simple question is not so simple.

I had the occasion to teach during my PhD course and also as an Adjunct Faculty in my institute.

I was also the Course Director of the IRS (C&CE) officers of 2008 and 2009 batch where I took a large number of classes.

  • I have found that in the class some students learn so well that they can write even better answer than me.
  • However, I have also found that some students are so ignorant of my teaching that I feel as if I have not taught them at all.

The learning by a student is a combination of the effort of the teacher and the student.

If a student is not willing, no teacher can teach him.

If a student is mischievous, he would learn bad things even if the teacher is teaching good things in the class.

A teacher was trying to explain to the students the ill effects of drinking alcohol.

He took two beakers. One was filled with water and the other was filled with alcohol.

He then took one insect and dropped on the beaker that was filled with water.

The insect could easily swim over the water and reached to the other side.

Then he dropped the insect in the beaker filled with alcohol.

The insect couple not swim but died within no time.

Then the teacher asked the students, ‘What lesson you learn from this experiment?’

One student replied, ‘Sir! It means that if you drink alcohol, it will kill all the worms in your body.’

This is what happens with motivational speakers also.

If you are a good learner, you would find their lectures extremely useful and life transforming.

However, if you're dumb or you are there to only prove the speaker wrong, you would find the lecture and the speaker both useless.

Changing Yourself or Changing the World ?

You are asking to compare two things which are incomparable.

  • Changing the world is impossible.
  • Changing the self is immediately possible.

Most people waste their life trying to change the world and in the process they themselves change to fit into the world.

No one can change the objective world, which always consists of good as well evil. .

  • Many great saints, prophets and even Avatars of God tried to change the world, through love and spiritual knowledge but they failed.
  • Many philosophers tried to change the world by giving the world new thoughts, but they too failed to change the world.
  • Many kings and tyrants tried to change the world by sword and terror, but they also failed.
  • Many revolutionaries tried to change the world by overthrowing the rulers and they too failed.

The objective world is never going to change.

However, it possible to change your subjective world to a great extent.

And that can be done by changing yourself.

  • If you become good, the world becomes good to you.
  • If you become evil, the world becomes evil to you.

Hence, be the change that you wish to see in the world.

When you make yourself good, your world becomes good to you, though the same world would continue to remain evil for other people who are themselves evil.

If a cab driver makes more money than an IT professional, why should I study?

Karma's Role In Unemployment

Regrets...........

Tuesday, 8 April 2025

If a cab driver makes more money than an IT professional, why should I study?

You should continue to study so that you would understand what false equivalence is and how to avoid falling into it.

So these are the gems that your finding-A cab driver makes more money than an IT professional-ignores:

  1. An entry level cab driver might make more money than the IT professional, but a senior-level IT professional would have more relaxed life, more vacations, more rooms in the house, more money in stocks, gold and bank than a senior-level cab driver.
  2. All cab drivers, regardless of age or experience, generally earn a fixed rate per trip. In contrast, a high-level IT professional can earn 10 to 100 times more than someone just starting out in the industry.
  3. If you're unhappy in IT, you can always switch to driving a cab. But if you start as a cab driver and later realize your assumptions were wrong, transitioning into IT becomes significantly harder.
  4. Your knowledge compounds in IT. Based on your projects and work experience, you grow up the ladder. And this compounded knowledge results in more money. As cab driver, well, your knowledge is stagnant and your income depends on inflation and not on your skill.
  5. Your IT job has paid holidays, medical leave and health insurance. As cab driver, if you don’t work, no pay.

So

The thing is

Choose right data and derive right conclusions to take right decisions.

Most people don’t know the principle of............

Most people don’t know the principle of energy management.

You might have heard and practice time management but one of the most underrated resource is your energy.

Just like time, energy is a finite resource and you only have a finite amount of it every day.

Hence it is important to spend it wisely because just like money, if you make a bad investment of energy you will get bad returns.

There are three aspects of energy management.

  1. Conserving energy.
  2. Enhancing energy.
  3. Directing excess energy into something meaningful.

Conserving energy:

You might not realise it but you are draining tons of valuable energy by doing certain things like browsing social media or watching YouTube videos.

Here are certain ways you can conserve your energy.

  1. Stop browsing social media endlessly, if you want to use social media use it at the end of the day after your have made a good investment of your energy into meaningful activities like working on your goals.
  2. Avoid arguing with people, it is a big energy drain when you get into arguments with people on the internet and in real life.
  3. Avoid negative people at all costs, people who talk about negative things all the time when you meet them. Your mind is a garden, don’t let these people turn it into a dumping yard.
  4. If there is something which bothers you at the current moment, write it on a piece of paper and say to yourself that you will deal with it later. When you are constantly worried about something while you are working or studying it will drain a lot of your energy.
  5. Stop thinking about things you cant change, not everything can be your control so there is no point in draining your energy thinking about something you cant control.
  6. Work on one task at a time, multitasking and context switching are again huge energy drainers. We waste a lot of time when we switch from doing one task to other.
  7. Pro tip: Treat your energy like money and spend it wisely. Would you pay money to browse a dumb social networking site which offers you no value ? If not then why would you waste your energy which is much valuable then money ?

Enhancing your energy:

There are certain things you can do to enhance your vital energy, these things are simple and can be done by almost anyone.

  1. Improve your physical fitness, it has a huge impact on how you feel. You don’t have to become a bodybuilder or go to a gym to be fit. You can just walk / run for 30–40 minutes a day and do some pushups.
  2. Have a good diet, your body is a vehicle and your food is your fuel. Would you put crappy fuel in your Mercedes ? If not then why would you put junk in your body? Stop eating junk food and eat healthy. Eating healthy does not mean you have to buy those expensive protein tubs. There are a lot of food items which are nutritious and yet cheap like groundnut, bananas, eggs etc. If you fuel your body well, it will produce more energy.
  3. Take multi vitamins and mineral supplements, they are vital to your brain health and can enhance your performance a lot. You never know which vital vitamins or minerals your body lacs hence it is better to do a blood test once a year and visit a doctor. Don’t go for those expensive multivitamins which cost a fortune. Generic multivitamins at your local medical store are enough and they are affordable.
  4. Taking a power nap is another great way to recharge your mind and body. If you feel tired and exhausted during the day, instead of using your phone better take a 20 minute nap. You will feel fresh and energised to work.

Directing excess energy into something meaningful:

By the end of the day we do have some excess energy.

You can spend it any any way you want but make sure that you don’t invest it into something which is counter-productive like watching TV or spending time watching dopamine inducing videos.

Bill Gates has this trampoline room built in his house so that his kids can spend their excess energy jumping all day.

The reason why it is important to spend this excess energy is to avoid its misuse.

When you have an energy built-up and it has nowhere to go, chances are we will misuse it.

Other things which you can do to spend this energy are:

  1. Reading a book which will help you sleep better.
  2. Working out at home or at a gym.
  3. Going for a swim.
  4. If you are into art, you can draw, write an article or a poem.

Once you get better at the above three things you will eventually have the energy to work on your goals and wont feel tired and lazy.

Plus when you have the energy to work on your goals and you are working towards it, you would feel naturally motivated and driven to work.

The reason why you are feeling low right now is because your body is signalling you to stop abusing all the energy you have and get things in order.
