We live in a society of addicts.
Almost everyone you meet, whether they are consciously aware of it or not, is an addict.
Whether their addiction is to a chemical substance like alcohol, cocaine, or opiates or to a distraction like porn, video games, social media, or TV, the average person is deeply addicted to things that provide no value in their life.
The problem is, our biology has tricked us into believing that our vices are a force for good.
Every time you take a shot, watch a steamy video online, or level up your character in World of Warcraft, your brain produces dopamine—the pleasure neurotransmitter—and basically says.
“Hey, GREAT job! You did something that feels good… now go do it again.”
The problem, however, is that our brains are (unfortunately for us) a bit stupid.
They evolved for a different era when resources were scarce and life was remarkably different from how it is today.
And as a result, our brains reward us every single day for activities and addictions that derail us from our purpose, steal our time and energy, and stop us from achieving what we want most.
When you consider that the AVERAGE person (according to the best statistics I could find and assuming that they start their vices at 21 and go until 78) will waste…
62,415 hours watching television or playing video games
41,610 hours on social media
1,976 hours watching other people have sex on the internet
Consume, at a minimum, 14,820 drinks and 148,200 hours will be spent either hungover or dealing with the negative impact of drinking.
Waste 68,400 working hours due to avoidable diet and lifestyle driven fatigue and distraction
It’s pretty clear that those seemingly harmless vices we all fall prey to aren’t so harmless after all.
Just consider…
What could you do with an extra 100,000 hours?
How would your life change if you became a master of ten high income skills?
Thing is… we all have more time than we admit. We simply waste it on things that don’t matter.
If you can flip this, reducing your vices by 80% (because we still need to have fun sometimes) and spending the majority of your time going on epic journeys and pursuing meaningful goals, your entire life can change almost overnight.
So let me ask you…
What are your vices costing you? What would your life look like without them? What are you sacrificing for your addictions?
And most importantly… are you willing to change?
Just food for thought.
Stay Grounded,
Andrew Ferebee
